How to Confirm the October Home Health Grouper Update Before Claims Move

CMS has posted the October home health grouper update. Version 07.2.26 of the Home Health Prospective Payment System Grouper applies to claims with From dates on or after October 1, 2026, and Medicare systems implement it on October 5. The release is a data update for the annual ICD-10-CM code set change, not a rewrite of grouper logic. Agencies that still run the April package on October From-date claims risk deleted codes, successor codes that need a laterality note, and returns that waste a billing week.
CR 14509 and transmittal R13793CP make the version rule plain. Home Health Line flagged the download in late August when MLN Connects pointed providers to the CMS Grouper Software page. A practical read of the v07.2.26 tables shows about 190 added diagnosis codes and 30 deleted ones, with no existing code changing clinical group. The risk is billing a code that no longer exists, or dropping to an unspecified child that CMS assigns to no clinical group. Separately, CR 14510 adds 19 HCPCS codes to the consolidated billing non-routine supply list on the same effective and implementation dates, so billing staff should brief suppliers and intake on those codes in the same sitting.
How to confirm the home health grouper update before claims move
Start with the EMR or billing vendor: ask which grouper build is live for From dates on or after October 1, and get the version stamp in writing. Pull active charts that still carry deleted codes such as common cardiomyopathy, arrhythmia, plantar, and osteomyelitis parents that split this year, then move each October From-date period to a documented successor. Prefer a laterality-specific code when the record supports it. Unspecified children often group to nothing. Check periods that straddle the date. The grouper picks its table by From date, so a period that started September 30 still groups under the prior table even if it ends in October. Walk one sample claim through your pre-bill queue with coding and billing together so the handoff is visible before October 5 processing loads.
CareSync® does not replace the CMS grouper or your coding console. It can keep planned-versus-completed visit visibility readable while coding and billing close the October diagnosis cleanup, so leaders are not also guessing whether the week's visits matched the plan.
Name one owner for the October grouper check. Confirm the vendor version, clear deleted codes on open October periods, and note the nineteen consolidated billing supply codes for the same effective window. Understand the From-date rule once. Do not leave the first returned claim to teach the team.
